What to Consider When Buying a Truck for Your Business

Logistics and transport in South Africa and the rest of Africa are the lifeblood of most industries – commercial, industrial, agricultural or otherwise; because without transport, there is no trade.

So, whether you’re a first-time buyer or are expanding your fleet of trucks, you may find it challenging to narrow down your options or find a truck sales partner that understands the nature of your business. Here’s some food for thought before you make that all-important purchase decision.

Design Your Own Truck

Well, not completely, but in a sense, that’s just what any business owner should do before buying a vehicle or adding to their fleet. Obviously, it’s not necessarily viable to have your vehicles custom-designed, but you can start your search with a “picture” of the vehicle you need before you’ve even considered a single purchase option.

It’s easier to create that picture than you might think, too. But the more detail you’re able to add, the better. For example, look at the cargo that will be transported on a regular basis. Take measurements and weight, and project quantities so that you can decide on the most ideal storage space/size for your needs.

Then consider how much power and durability you need to maintain your delivery schedule in the long-run, and you have a pretty good picture of what you need. Once you have your “design”, start looking for a vehicle that matches your vision.

Less is More

It’s easy to be taken in by marketing. Who wouldn’t want the latest tracking system, a Blu-Ray player, reverse cameras, anti-crash buffers, built-in coffee machine, butler, chef or whatever else is new in the world of trucking technology?

Okay, there may have been a bit of exaggeration there. But, no matter how appealing and exciting expensive new features may sound, start by asking yourself if you really need them.

Certain new technologies are becoming increasingly more essential in fleet management – like GPS hardware and software, added safety technology etc. And it is important to consider adopting tech that is likely to become standard in the future. But frills that are not essential – like, say, motorised electronic seatbelts or a big screen TV – should really only be considered once the essentials are covered.

The Bottom Line of Trucks

Well, money is always the most obvious concern, isn’t it? Finance is the one thing that can make or break the process of investing in any kind of fleet-based solution. And the choice is yours whether you would rather lease or own your vehicle.

At Impala Truck Sales, we can find a financing solution that suits your business and won’t break the bank, as we have established partnerships with reputable financial institutions who facilitate the process as painlessly as possible.
