What You Need to Know When Buying a Used Truck Tractor
It’s a lot more complicated than simply pressing the “buy truck” button. When you are buying a used truck, truck tractor or trailer for your business, there is a lot to consider. Theunis Botha, Truck Sales and Workshop Manager for Impala Truck Sales, shares insight on a few of the “Must-Haves” when you’re looking to buy.
“Buying a used truck doesn’t have to be a gamble. There are a lot of commercial trucks for sale out there and the variety can feel a bit much. But with proper research, you can easily narrow down your options. The more you know, the easier it will be to make the right decision and not look back.
KNOW YOUR TRUCK’S HISTORY
“Knowing where your truck comes from is the key to a long and successful relationship. And that is exactly what it should be. Much like having a human relationship, you go into the interaction knowing the facts about each other and forming a bond of trust. It’s really the same when looking at a used truck/tractor for sale.
“Your business needs to be able to trust that when you buy a truck, it will get you from point A to B continuously and with minimal complications. And building trust always begins with a conversation. Start by asking the used truck dealer whether the used truck/tractor for sale has a full-service history. If this can’t be presented, it’s probably best to walk away.
“Once you’ve crossed the service history barrier, it’s time to check the important components that make the used truck/trailer your perfect travel partner. When you buy a used truck, these are the most important things to check:
- Axle – Consider the goods you will be carrying on a regular basis in relation to the axle configuration of the truck/trailer – i.e. 4×4, 4×2, 6×4 etc. Is it the right size and configuration for the goods you’re transporting? A professional truck sales consultant should be able to help you do the calculations.
- Engine – You can’t just take the salesperson’s word for it. And if you don’t have the know-how to inspect the engine before you buy a truck, it’s always wise to take someone with you who does have some knowledge. Open the bonnet and look for any leaks, and start up the engine. Look out for any smoke while it’s running. Also pay close attention to the key components that keep the vehicle running.
- Brakes and brake pads – These can be costly to replace and dangerous if they aren’t in good condition. Make sure you conduct a proper inspection.
- Interior – Is there any damage to the dashboard? Is there wear and tear on the seats? Conduct a thorough inspection to make sure the truck will still be workable for anyone who drives it.”
